From the golden-age ōkubi-e style: emotion read through face and gesture alone. Associated with the romance “Deeply Hidden Love” (Fukaku Shinobu Koi), the sheet shows quiet intensity as a woman is held by a letter she cannot put down.
Layered letter paper — follow the stacked edges of folded paper and the ink density of the script; the length of the story becomes visible in the object.
Brows and downcast lids — the arc of the brow, lowered eyelids, and tightened mouth hold restrained longing; compare mentally with the triptych “Three Beauties of the Present Day.”
