Three Beauties

Okita of the Naniwa-ya Tea-house

難波屋おきた(茶を出す)

Naniwaya Okita offering tea, Utamaro portrait of an Asakusa tea-house beauty — Okita of the Naniwa-ya Tea-house. The Metropolitan Museum of Art (public domain).
Kitagawa Utamaro. The Metropolitan Museum of Art (public domain).

Okita worked at a tea house beside Asakusa’s Zōjōji gate. Utamaro finds passion inside an ordinary gesture — tea offered, fingers tense, composure held.

Fingertips — the slight flex supporting the bowl maps emotion through the body.

Mica vs. skin — white mica ground against translucent skin lifts the figure off the sheet.

Beauty in labor — without lavish costume, workaday grace becomes the subject; Edo “iki” lived in daily motion.

Receive the bowl with your eyes — the tea house quiet is still in the paper.

Extended Japanese viewing notes: 難波屋おきた(茶を出す).
